IF you are after a fulfilling meal of posh City standards at a reasonable local price, then just point the compass at the newly refurbished Flame Restaurant.
With several years' training from top Swiss restaurants, owner Riza Alpkan has invested in Green Lanes, believing excellent food and service, coupled with a warm welcome, will lift the community and give the Harringay Ladder a "bounce" - without compromising value for money.
Our Muska Boregi starter was presented in a way that just screamed authenticity - a tasty teaser filled with feta cheese, spinach and herbs around a light feather light filo pastry. Falafel starters are always a good tastebud gauge in anticipation for what is to come - they were hot off the pan, grease-free and left us wanting more.
The glorious seafood menu in its vastness had a lot to live up to, ranging from the grilled Mediterranean-style sea bass to sautéed mussels which, we were advised, packed a delicious punch - though I opted for the knockout salmon platter. A spicy grilled fresh salmon steak served with salad and potatoes on the side, it was absolutely perfect.
Finding it almost impossible to not order a meaty main, my companion opted for a lamb shish kebab with yoghurt on a bed of tomato sauce flavoured with butter and parsley.
Living up to the restaurant's name, the lamb had the distinctive taste of an outdoor barbecue, a far cry from your average kebab takeaway. With the obligatory side salad platter, the grilling style here adds so much character to the taste of the food, making this a healthy, minimum-grease bite to eat.
Vegetarians are catered for with a decent array of dishes championed by the Biber Dolmasi - stuffed green peppers with a filling of rice, pine kernels and aromatic onions. And, on a mild summer evening, soft drinks were a refreshing option alongside a hearty meal.
With its unique charm and cleverly tailored recipes, Flame Restaurant is highly recommended to lovers of Mediterranean food. As for those still sitting on the fence, try popping in - it's sure to leave you hungry for more. - JERRY LOGO
